Members Statement - Chris Meddows-Taylor

11 August 2026

Last month we lost a man whose contribution to regional Victoria, the labour movement and the Ripon electorate cannot be overstated.

Chris Meddows-Taylor was a former six-time mayor of the Central Goldfields shire, respected public servant, champion of regional development and one of the driving forces behind the Victorian goldfields World Heritage bid.

Throughout his life Chris devoted his extraordinary talents to making communities better, stronger and more connected. He knew every corner of our region, every challenge, every opportunity and every story worth telling. He was generous with his wisdom, relentless in his advocacy and deeply committed to the people he served.

Whether it was improved services for Talbot, better transport and telecommunications or economic growth Chris never stopped working for his community. Even in his final days he was still focused on how to make life better for others.

Beyond his achievements Chris will be remembered for his kindness, wit, charm and wicked humour. He greeted people with warmth and sincerity, often saying, ā€˜I’m all the better for seeing you.’

In many ways that simple phrase captured who he was: a gentleman, an optimist and someone who made others feel valued.

To his beloved partner Frank, who is here with us today, and to all who loved him I extend my deepest condolences. Chris Meddows-Taylor leaves a remarkable legacy of public service, friendship and community leadership.

We are a lesser community for having lost him, but we are a far better community for having had him.

Vale, Chris.
